Visual Weight and Asymmetrical balance within a space

Often overlooked when assembling an interior scheme, the importance of an overall sense of balance - not just in terms of material proportions and their effective use, but also in terms of the physical space occupied by objects on each of the spaces' 6 planes.

Ideally, no 'dead spots' (empty space providing little to no value) should exist greater than what the overall proportion and scale of the room permits. Counter-intuitively, larger spaces can allow for more empty negative space utilization and smaller spaces tend not to benefit from the overuse of negative space - for both practical and aesthetic reasons. This makes the choosing and placement of furniture a very practical concern for an overall sense of balance and thus, beauty in the space.

In reference to the above image, notice the balancing of the rounded, curvaceous forms on both the left and right of the space. The rounded white armchairs reference the arched mirror on the opposite side of the room.

Similarly, the same can be said of the linear sofa and its intention in referencing the existing linear, simple-lined fireplace.

The straight lines of the diamond lattice pattern of the underlying rug further cements the linear reference within the space.

Also, notice the overall sense of quite and restraint in the above image. A strong focus on materials, subtle colour palette and gentle no-fuss forms allow the architectural features of the space to really shine through what little noise is present - notice the gray base of a large arch spanning the ceiling on the right background of the image.

Overall, the effective use of material, colour, simple forms and placement achieves the overall sense of balance and resulting stillness and calmness of the room. Balance not just between the furniture items present but also balance between the  furniture collectively and the space that it is occupying. This is what every great room should aim to achieve and needs to be considered in order to achieve optimum and felt results in the living environment.
